Hair Structure
Hair is broken down into 3 components
- The Cuticle …often described like fish scales or roofing tiles for a visual comparison. This is the layer that protects the hair.
- The Cortex …responsible for the hair’s elasticity, flexibility, strength, and colour. It is inside this area that permanent colour forms acid bonds with keratin chains and becomes part of the hair structure.
- The Medulla …this innermost section of the hair has an unknown function. It’s not unusual to find healthy, normal hair without a medulla!
